Treasures from the Patek Philippe Museum Book
Treasures from the Patek Philippe Museum – Slipcase, Two Volumes – Peter Friess
This handsome new publication explores the collection of the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva. The museum for that renowned Swiss watch brand contains not only an archive of pieces made by the company, but also highly important watches made by other companies and individuals throughout history. If you are in Geneva, I can highly recommend a visit to the museum, as the scope of the museum’s contents really brings home both the craftsmanship and the importance of the mechanical developments of the watch and its movement.
The two volume hardback edition is housed in a solid slipcase. Both books are written by Peter Friess, the curator of the museum. The brown covered volume explores the pieces made by Patek Philippe and is set out chronologically. The preface is written by Philippe Stern, the Honorary President of Patek Philippe. The volume goes on to explore the development of the company and the clocks, pocket watches, purse watches and wristwatches that they have made. It includes famous examples of their work including Duke Ellington’s Ref. 1563 watch.
The blue covered volume concentrates on the watches in the collection that were not made by Patek Philippe themselves. This includes some of the very first examples of the watch from c. 1550; the remarkable Jehan Cremsdorff watch from c. 1650 and beautifully enamelled pieces from throughout the ages; form watches from the 17th Century including one in the shape of dolphin and another of cruciform. Later pieces include watches that incorporate automata, and also important mechanical developments in watches by Abraham-Louis Breguet, Jacquet-Droz, George Margetts and Thomas Mudge.
The combined books provide a beautifully illustrated guide to some of the highlights of the museum’s collection and are perfect for individuals interested in both the brand and the history of horology.
Each volume measures 25.6cm x 28.5cm x 1.5cm and has 106 pages. They are both hardback and have a page-marking ribbon.
The slipcase measures 26cm x 29.4cm x 3.6cm
About the Author
In directing and curating the Patek Philippe Museum, Peter Friess, a master watchmaker, patented inventor, educator, and art historian, found his dream job, which, he says, “put me into direct contact with the world’s most creative watchmakers and skilled craftsmen of all kinds. For me, Patek Philippe is not only a manufacturer of watches, but a protector of world heritage, keeping alive crafts like enamel painting, which would not have survived without the company’s efforts to preserve them.”
