Louis Poulsen AJ Mini Table Lamp
Arne Jacobsen designed this fixture, among many other features, for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, in 1957. The table lamp yields a pleasant downward directed light with its white painted inner shade. Furthermore, the shade can be tilted to adjust light distribution.
The AJ lamp family is considered to be the design Jacobsen is most famous for worldwide. Apart from the AJ Table, the AJ family consisted of a small table lamp too, a floor lamp, a wall lamp as well as a table mounted lamp that were all to be found around the SAS Royal Hotel after its inauguration in 1960.
The clean distinguished shape of the AJ Lamp with its immaculate light could be seen all around the hotel in copper and stainless steel. Together with the AJ Royal, the AJ lamp family was part of the overall design concept, which Jacobsen created for the hotel. He practically designed everything himself. The parallels between the straight lines and the combination of straight and curved angles in the AJ lamp design are also visible in the geometric contours of his buildings.

About Louis Poulsen
Founded in 1874, the Danish lighting manufacturer Louis Poulsen has collaborated with renowned Danish designers to create timeless, high-quality lamps that produce exceptional light. In celebration of its 150th anniversary, the company presents a special anniversary collection featuring iconic lamps that have become unique, collectible pieces distinguished by a pale pink hue inside the lampshades and elegant brass details.
The inspiration behind Louis Poulsen’s designs have emerged from the belief that shadow is just as aesthetically important as light. This sentiment is clearly portrayed in the iconic PH Artichoke lamp with 72 precisely positioned leaves to provide a glare free light from all angles. Over the years, this philosophy has attracted many notable architects and designers such as, Poul Henningsen, Arne Jacobsen, Verner Panton, Oki Sato and Louise Campbell to name a few.
About the Designer
Born and raised in Copenhagen, Jacobsen pursued his architecture degree at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. After graduating in 1927, he got his first job working for the City Architect of Copenhagen, and just two years later he opened his own studio.
As an architect, Arne Jacobsen had very strong decision-making skills. This resulted in many of his more famous projects being ‘gesamtkunstwerk’, meaning he designed not only the building itself, but also the majority of the interior details, such as light fixtures, furniture, door handles, fabrics and even cutlery. Along with ‘The Egg’ and ‘The Swan’ chairs, Jacobsen originally designed the AJ Lamp for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, which opened in 1960.
Jacobsen worked as a professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts for 11 years, influencing an entire generation of Danish architects, each of whom eventually developed their own architectural language, many of which were built upon the same functionalist and minimalist approach as Arne Jacobsen’s.
